Since 2012 independent film and comedy fans have been aware of Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen thanks to their work on the hit series Portlandia. The show is filmed in Portland Oregon, and what many people don’t know is that Brownstein also has a personal connection to the city since she’s also a PDX local.

About Carrie Brownstein

Born in 1974, Carrie Brownstein grew up and attended college in the Seattle / Redmond Washington area before moving to Portland Oregon.

Although she’s well-known for her sketch comedy work with Fred Armisen, including their original internet sketch comedy show, called ThunderAnt (2005), Brownstein gravitated towards music when she was in her teens and learned how to play the guitar at the age of 15.

By the time she was in her early twenties, Carrie Brownstein was part of several well-known rock bands including Excuse 17 and Sleater-Kinney.

“Music has always been my constant, my salvation. It’s cliché to write that, but it’s true. From dancing around to Michael Jackson and Madonna as a kid to having my mind blown by the first sounds of punk and indie rock to getting to play my own songs and have people listen, music is what got me through. Over the years, music put a weapon in my hand and words in my mouth it backed me up and shielded me, it shook me and scared me and showed me the way; music opened me up to living and being and feeling.”

Portlandia

With Portlandia approaching its final season next year, Carrie Brownstein is busier than ever before since her band Sleater-Kinney recently reformed after a hiatus and has been touring, but will her sketch comedy work continue? The answer to this question is yes. Brownstein and Arisen have been a great comedy duo over the years and he’s even said this about their relationship “it has all of the things that I’ve ever wanted, you know, aside from like the physical stuff, but the intimacy that I have with her is like no other.”
