PORTLAND, Ore. – If you’re a fan of alternative rock or indie movies then the name Courtney Love will be well-known to you since she’s one of the biggest names to achieve mainstream success in both genres over the last 20 years.

What most people don’t know is that Courtney Love is from Portland Oregon and originally started her creative journey here before moving onto Los Angeles where she would ultimately form her well-known band: Hole before moving on to starring in films like The People vs. Larry Flynt in the 1990’s.

Courtney Love and Portland Oregon

Courtney Love was born in San Francisco in 1964 and moved around a lot during the first 12 years of her life. By the early 1970’s she was being raised in Portland Oregon by her stepfather, and by the age of 16 she was legally emancipated and living on her own.

Like many well-known musicians and writers over the last 30 years Love spent her time traveling between San Francisco and Portland where she started getting her feet wet in the music industry and formed her first band. During this time she also started acting as well and quickly achieved a taste of fame when she was cast in several indie movies, and music videos, but she quickly gave it all up for a few years when she moved to Alaska, taught herself to play guitar, and eventually moved to Los Angeles in the late 1980’s to form her band: Hole.

Courtney Love’s Music Success

By the early 1990’s Courtney Love was already recognized on the West Coast for her work with Hole and her marriage to Nirvana front man Curt Cobain. After Cobain’s death in 1994 Courtney Love rocketed to stardom thanks to the success of her band and performances in many commercially successful films in the mid 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Today at the age of 52 Courtney Love is clean after suffering from substance abuse for years, she continues performing with her band and as a solo artist around the world plus she also continues to remain active in film, television projects and fashion.
