Where to find Mother’s Day brunch — and more — for takeout and delivery at home

Are you planning on doing something special for your mom, or the mom in your life for Mother’s Day 2020? If so, the good news is that there are a variety of restaurants that are offering special takeout and delivery options for Mother’s Day this year.

Ava Gene’s and Tusk

For nearly two months, these two Submarine Hospitality Group restaurants have been operating out of the Ava Gene’s kitchen, serving greatest hits from both their menus alongside pizzas from the upcoming Cicoria. Both have great brunches, but Ava Gene’s will take the lead this weekend, offering a Mother’s Day “breakfast in bed” box with take-n-bake potato gratin, asparagus with goat cheese strata, olive oil cake with strawberries and malted whipped cream, mimosa kits and bouquets from Solabee. Pre-order online at avagenes.com Thursday morning for pickup Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 3377 S.E. Division St.

Bread & Ink Cafe

The dining room might be closed, but this surprisingly technologically savvy Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard standard, which already runs a half-dozen virtual restaurants from its adjacent Waffle Window, is offering a streamlined version of its usual breakfast menu. That means scrambles, omelets, waffles and French toast, all available for delivery or takeout at 3610 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd. Call 503-239-4756 to order.

Bullard

Chef Doug Adams and Jen Quist’s Texas-inspired downtown Portland hotspot pivoted quickly to takeout family meals after the coronavirus crisis hit, and has served as a model for a number of other top Portland restaurants in the weeks since. Their nightly dinners sell out quickly — I was able to snag a fried chicken dinner from their website this week — but their two Mother’s Day options are still available. Those include smoked brisket Texas red brunch enchiladas offered for curbside pickup at 813 S.W. Alder St. on Saturday, and a Mom’s Day care package with a mimosa kit, rhubarb ginger coffee cake, a bouquet of flowers from Colibri and more available for delivery Sunday. Visit exploretock.com/bullard for details.

Coquine

Chef Katy Millard’s critically acclaimed Mount Tabor restaurant hasn’t advertised any weekend brunch specials yet, but some of their best-known dishes are available online for pickup Saturday and Sunday night at the restaurant, 3839 S.E. Belmont St.. Those include potato gnocchi with morels, a half chicken and a lamb leg roast in the $28-$31 range (feeds 2-3). Sides, wine and desserts are also available. Visit coquinepdx.com for more information.

Gravy

Once upon a time, when I supplemented my income as an Oregonian sports clerk with a retail job on North Mississippi Avenue, a to-go bowl of bruleed oatmeal from Gravy was a special treat before a shift. The staff would even let me take it away in a regular ceramic bowl, so long as I brought it back. Now the restaurant, which had a second location on Northeast Sandy Boulevard before the pandemic, has reopened its popular North Portland location (right next to Radar, below) for takeout only, with that oatmeal, fried egg sandwiches, scrambles, country fried steak and gravy and more. Order online at gravyrestaurant.com for pickup 8 a.m. to noon daily.

Kachka

Portland’s modern Russian restaurant has spent the past seven weeks operating more like a grocery store than a restaurant. But for Mother’s Day, Kachka will offer gifts, meals, treats and more, all available for delivery in Portland or curbside pick up. Selections include a Mother’s Day Brunch for two ($65) with a cured salmon salad, egg and onion pirog, roasted baby beets, a Little Gems salad and cheesecake-style chamomile zapekanka. Bloody Mary and mimosa kits are available, as are caviar, chocolate poppy seed roll cakes and flowers from Rosemary Stafford. Visit kachkapdx.com to order; pickup at 960 S.E. 11th (lavka entrance).

Milk Glass Mrkt

Nancye Benson’s charming Overlook neighborhood cafe and market has an online site at milk-glass-mrkt.square.site/bakery with baked goods, farm produce boxes and bottles of wine available for pickup Wednesday and Saturday. Items include Milk Glass Mrkt’s tasty focaccia, granola, fudge brownies, macaron boxes, cookie bags and various pantry items. 2150 N. Killingsworth St.

Mother’s Bistro & Bar

Downtown Portland’s restaurant with Mother’s right there in the name isn’t serving brunch. But the restaurant is open from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday for a variety of comfort food dishes ready to be picked up or dropped off at your house, including chicken and dumplings, meatloaf and gravy and a five-hour braised pot roast. Visit the Mother’s Bistro website at mothersbistro.com for more information. 121 S.W. Third Ave.

Normandie

This coastal-French inspired restaurant has put together a Mother’s Day Picnic Brunch. For $60, the family-sized meal includes a savory galette, homemade brioche with plum jam and French butter, Bayonne ham and pickles, miso deviled eggs, fresh fruit and a spring salad with wine and Bloody Mary or mimosa kits available for extra. Pre-order through the Normandie website at normandiepdx.com for pickup times between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or tack on an extra $5 for delivery throughout the Portland metro area. 1005 S.E. Ankeny St.
