Ward Cunningham – Developer of The First Wiki

Thanks to the Internet, we have a lot of things in our lives that didn’t exist 30 years ago including Wikis which we have Ward Cunningham to thank for that. He developed the first Wiki all the way back in 1995 and the world hasn’t been the same since because the term “wiki” these days is closely associated with the well-known Wikipedia.com and of course a variety of other websites like wiki leaks.

About Howard G. “Ward” Cunningham

Back in the early 1990’s, the Internet was still in its infancy and there was an “anything goes” approach online that led to the development of many of the online services that we know today including amazon.com, aol.com and of course Wikis.

Ward Cunningham developed the first Wiki website called wikiwikiweb.com in 1994 and installed it on his software consultancy website.

The Man Behind Wiki

Like many programmers, he never patented his Wiki concept because he never thought the idea would make money and of course, someone else ran with the idea and the rest is history. The Wiki concept took off and quickly spawned a variety of similar wiki websites including those that we know today

Since his work in the early 1990’s, Cunningham has been a pivotal player in the tech scene and has served as chief technology officer for a variety of companies including AboutUs and CitizenGlobal.

What’s He Doing Today?

Over the years he’s continued innovating and creating new ideas and concepts. He’s famously credited with the concept of “Cunningham’s Law”. The basic premise of this law is it’s easier to get an answer to a question online by posting the wrong answer, instead of asking a question.

Having earned his place in history, he continues to command respect from his peers in the tech community. Cunningham lives and works in the PDX area. When he’s not working, he enjoys dabbling in amateur radio and enjoying everything that the area has to offer.
