{"id":640,"date":"2016-12-01T15:08:53","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T23:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/?p=640"},"modified":"2016-12-01T16:31:54","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T00:31:54","slug":"portland-is-not-growing-that-fast-after-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/?p=640","title":{"rendered":"Study Confirms Portland Is Not Growing That Fast After All"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/download.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-641\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/download-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"download\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/download-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/download.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/\">PDX People<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to a recent study by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abodo.com\">www.abodo.com<\/a><\/span> we know that <strong>Portland Oregon<\/strong> isn\u2019t growing as fast as many people in the news media claim it is; in fact, Portland Oregon only grew less than 1 percent in 2015 while other cities like Atlanta, Austin, and Orlando grew faster than Portland did.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Portland Oregon U.S. Census Bureau Data<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although many similar studies have been done in recent years, the abodo.com study comes straight from <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/table\/PST045215\/4159000\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a><\/span> American Community Survey Data that was released in September of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Digging into the Census bureau data we find that the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro area actually grew by 7.28 percent in 2015 but, roughly 6.6 percent of the population moved out and the result is just .91 percent growth for 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The growth rate for 2016 could be much different than 2015 because we\u2019ve had a lot of new homes, condos, and town homes built in the Portland Oregon region over the last year but home prices and rents here are still at all-time highs so when the statistics for 2016 are examined next year we could find that Portland had the same growth as 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/portland-oregon-sign-at-dusk-james-dunbar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-566 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/portland-oregon-sign-at-dusk-james-dunbar-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Portland Oregon \" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/portland-oregon-sign-at-dusk-james-dunbar-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/portland-oregon-sign-at-dusk-james-dunbar-600x438.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/portland-oregon-sign-at-dusk-james-dunbar-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/portland-oregon-sign-at-dusk-james-dunbar.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Where Is Everyone Moving?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>As fast as people are leaving Virginia Beach, they\u2019re coming into the oceanside city even faster. Of the top 50 most populated metro areas in the country, Virginia Beach takes first place for the largest percentage of new residents from elsewhere in the U.S. between 2014 and 2015, with 10.53%.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Also as in the above section, Denver takes second place, with 9.4% of its population comprising new residents. The\u00a0Denver Post, noting that Colorado has a higher moving rate than any other state, likened Denver to Ellis Island. It\u2019s often the first place people land when they relocate to the state and is a huge draw for Coloradans from more rural areas as well. (And as we saw above, people leave rapidly as well \u2014 adding to the Ellis Island \u201cgateway\u201d effect.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>All in all, the top 10 cities gaining new residents the fastest is remarkably similar to the list of cities people are leaving the fastest \u2014 comprising arguably some of the most popular cities in the nation.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Precisely why is unclear; it could be that people chase careers into the city, and continue to chase them out. Many of these cities \u2014 including Austin, Portland, Denver, and Atlanta \u2014 are some of\u00a0Millennials\u2019 favorite cities, and Millennials love to be\u00a0on the move.
