Born in 1946 in Portland, Mary Carlin Yates<\/a> went to college at Oregon<\/a> State University before moving on to earn her Master\u2019s from New York University where she would also pursue a doctoral in Asian Affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n Following her graduation from New York University, she began a diplomatic career that spanned three decades. During her time in service, she primarily served in three regions of the world: Europe, Africa, and Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n Over the years she\u2019s been an ambassador to several countries and she served on President Obama\u2019s National Security Council from 2009 to 2011. She\u2019s also been awarded the Superior Honor Award, United States Department State, Superior Honor award, Meritorious Honor award, Presidential Performance award for Excellence and the White House, 2004, Lois Roth Award for Excellence in Information & Cultural Diplomacy, United States Information Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n Besides the prestigious positions that she\u2019s held over the years, Mrs. Yates has also been a political advisor at the European Command and deputy commander for the new U.S. Africa Command.<\/span><\/p>\n Now at the age of 74, even though she\u2019s since retired from foreign service, Mary Carlin Yates<\/a> remains active and serves in a variety of positions for companies in the United States including on the Oregon State University Honors College Board of Regents and board director at the Atlantic Council in Washington DC.<\/span><\/p>\n Mrs. Yates has also been a prolific writer over the years and has contributed her knowledge to a variety of platforms including partnering with Kelsey Lilley to write 2017\u2019s paper Sudan: A Strategy For Re-Engagement.
