<\/a>One of the many things that are great about Portland Oregon<\/a> is that a lot of this country\u2019s best music from the last 10 years has originated here including folk\/alternative country music by singer\/songwriter Laura Veirs.<\/p>\n Born in 1973, like many musicians Laura\u2019s journey to becoming a recording artist didn\u2019t start out with a focus on music, she mastered the Chinese language and went to China to become a translator for an archaeological dig.<\/p>\n In 1999, Veirs released a\u00a0<\/em>self-titled album<\/a><\/em>, which was recorded live and featuring just herself and guitar. 2003 saw the release of\u00a0<\/em>Troubled by the Fire<\/a><\/em>, accompanied by veteran musicians such as\u00a0<\/em>Bill Frisell<\/a><\/em>. She then signed to\u00a0<\/em>Nonesuch<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and released\u00a0<\/em>Carbon Glacier<\/a><\/em>. She also signed to\u00a0<\/em>Bella Union<\/a><\/em>\u00a0for European distribution.\u00a0<\/em>Year of Meteors<\/a><\/em>\u00a0followed in August 2005, and was selected by the New York Times as a “critic’s choice”.<\/em><\/p>\n Veirs released her last full-length for Nonesuch,\u00a0Saltbreakers<\/a>, in 2007.\u00a0<\/em>July Flame<\/a><\/em>\u00a0appeared in January 2010 on her own Raven Marching Band Records. The\u00a0Washington Post praised it. <\/em><\/p>\n In November 2011, Veirs released the album\u00a0Tumble Bee: Laura Veirs Sings Folk Songs for Children. The album presents mostly traditional songs and features an array of guest musicians, including\u00a0<\/em>Colin Meloy<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>Jim James<\/a><\/em>, and\u00a0<\/em>Bela Fleck<\/a><\/em>.<\/em>\u00a0Tumble Bee\u00a0won a\u00a0<\/em>Parents’ Choice Award<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in 2012. <\/em><\/p>\n In September 2012, her first feature film soundtrack was released:\u00a0Hello I Must Be Going. The exclusive soundtrack features eight instrumental versions of previously released songs, five catalog favorites, and one new vocal track, “Spring Song”.<\/em><\/p>\n In August 2013, she released\u00a0<\/em>Warp and Weft<\/a><\/em>. In 2015, she worked on the album\u00a0<\/em>Carrie and Lowell<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/em>Sufjan Stevens<\/a><\/em>. Veirs husband and long-term collaborator Tucker Martine engineered some of the album.<\/em><\/p>\n Veirs was a lead songwriter for the 2016 album\u00a0<\/em>case\/lang\/veirs<\/a><\/em>, a collaborative project between Veirs,\u00a0k.d. lang<\/a>\u00a0and Neko Case.
