For indie rock music fans both new and old there\u2019s no better example of mid-1990\u2019s indie rock music than Pavement. Thanks to Portland\u2019s own Stephen Malkmus, and Pavement, we have access to a plethora of early 1990\u2019s indie rock tunes like: Cut Your Hair, Elevate Me Later and Stereo.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Stephen Malkmus<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Born in 1966 and now living in Portland with his wife and two daughters, Stephen originally started out in Stockton, CA and he was able to capitalize on the teen angst of the early 1980\u2019s when he learned how to play the guitar and eventually joined several popular grunge bands in the Stockton area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pavement<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Malkmus formed Pavement with\u00a0Scott Kannberg<\/a>\u00a0(aka Spiral Stairs) while he was living in Stockton during the 1980s.\u00a0Their first album,\u00a0Slanted & Enchanted<\/a>,\u00a0was released to critical acclaim, and the band continued to receive attention for subsequent releases. Pavement, and Malkmus in particular was hailed as spearheading the underground indie movement of the 1990s. Malkmus briefly appears as a singer in a coffee shop in the 1997 theatrical film\u00a0Sweethearts<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Janean Garofalo<\/a>. In 2001, following the 1999 dissolution of the band, Malkmus released his first self-titled solo album. He also was a member of rock group\u00a0Silver Jews<\/a>\u00a0along with poet\/lyricist David Berman.\u00a0In early 1999 Stephen Malkmus participated in a\u00a0Sonic Youth<\/a>\u00a0side project called Kim’s Bedroom that included bassist\/vocalist\u00a0Kim Gordon<\/a>, guitarist\/vocalist\u00a0Thurston Moore<\/a>, Chicago avant-garde veteran\u00a0Jim O’Rourke<\/a>, and renowned Japanese drummer\u00a0Ikue Mori<\/a>; they never released an album but did play a few live shows. Malkmus is currently the frontman of\u00a0The Jicks<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On May 23, 2003, in Milwaukee, while touring with his new band The Jicks, Malkmus opened the show by saying, “This is off our first record.” The band then proceeded to play an evening’s worth of Pavement songs, marking the second time Malkmus had played any of his previous band’s songs since their 1999 breakup, the first was on April 22, 2002, in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, where he played “In the Mouth a Desert”.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2007, Malkmus provided 3 songs to the\u00a0Todd Haynes’<\/a>\u00a0film\u00a0I’m Not There<\/a>, based on the life of\u00a0Bob Dylan<\/a>. He contributed on the songs “Ballad of a Thin Man<\/a>“, “Can’t Leave Her Behind” and “Maggie’s Farm<\/a>“. Malkmus has admitted that he was never “really a really big fan of Dylan but noted that his involvement with the film had made him listen “to him again a little closer. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Malkmus’s fourth studio album with\u00a0The Jicks<\/a>,\u00a0Real Emotional Trash<\/a>, was released in March 2008.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Pavement reunited in March 2010 and have since embarked on a world tour. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In August 2011 he released his fifth studio album with\u00a0The Jicks<\/a>,\u00a0Mirror Traffic<\/a>. He played the album\u00a0Ege Bamyasi<\/a>, originally by the band\u00a0Can<\/a>, in its entirety on December 1, 2012, at WEEK-END Festival in Cologne, Germany.\u00a0A recording of this performance was released as a limited-edition live album on Record Store Day 2013.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Malkmus’s sixth studio album with\u00a0the Jicks<\/a>,\u00a0Wig Out at Jagbags<\/a>, was released on January 7, 2014.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What\u2019s He Up To Today?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Since reuniting with Pavement back in 2010, Stephen has stayed busy working behind the scenes in the music industry scoring soundtracks for several hit television shows like Flakes and Arrested Development.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the age of 52 he hasn\u2019t showed any signs of slowing down and when he\u2019s not working on a project in the studio you can find him out on the road playing for live audiences in the Portland area and across the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n
