Thanks to Portland\u2019s own Stephen Malkmus, and Pavement, we have access to a plethora of early 1990\u2019s indie rock tunes like: Cut Your Hair, Elevate Me Later and Stereo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/386803479_98d3c277eb_b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3892 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/386803479_98d3c277eb_b-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen Malkmus\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/386803479_98d3c277eb_b.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/386803479_98d3c277eb_b-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/386803479_98d3c277eb_b-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/386803479_98d3c277eb_b-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>About Stephen Malkmus<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Born in 1966 and now living in Portland with his wife and two daughters, Stephen originally started out in Stockton, CA and he was able to capitalize on the teen angst of the early 1980\u2019s when he learned how to play the guitar and eventually joined several popular grunge bands in the Stockton area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3893 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010.jpg 306w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pavement2010-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Pavement<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Malkmus formed Pavement with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Kannberg\">Scott Kannberg<\/a>\u00a0(aka Spiral Stairs) while he was living in Stockton during the 1980s.\u00a0Their first album,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slanted_%26_Enchanted\">Slanted &amp; Enchanted<\/a>,\u00a0was released to critical acclaim, and the band continued to receive attention for subsequent releases. Pavement, and Malkmus in particular was hailed as spearheading the underground indie movement of the 1990s. Malkmus briefly appears as a singer in a coffee shop in the 1997 theatrical film\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweethearts_(1997_film)\">Sweethearts<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Janeane_Garofalo\">Janean Garofalo<\/a>. In 2001, following the 1999 dissolution of the band, Malkmus released his first self-titled solo album. He also was a member of rock group\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silver_Jews\">Silver Jews<\/a>\u00a0along with poet\/lyricist David Berman.\u00a0In early 1999 Stephen Malkmus participated in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonic_Youth\">Sonic Youth<\/a>\u00a0side project called Kim&#8217;s Bedroom that included bassist\/vocalist\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kim_Gordon\">Kim Gordon<\/a>, guitarist\/vocalist\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thurston_Moore\">Thurston Moore<\/a>, Chicago avant-garde veteran\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_O%27Rourke_(musician)\">Jim O&#8217;Rourke<\/a>, and renowned Japanese drummer\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ikue_Mori\">Ikue Mori<\/a>; they never released an album but did play a few live shows. Malkmus is currently the frontman of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Malkmus_and_the_Jicks\">The Jicks<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>On May 23, 2003, in Milwaukee, while touring with his new band The Jicks, Malkmus opened the show by saying, &#8220;This is off our first record.&#8221; The band then proceeded to play an evening&#8217;s worth of Pavement songs, marking the second time Malkmus had played any of his previous band&#8217;s songs since their 1999 breakup, the first was on April 22, 2002, in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, where he played &#8220;In the Mouth a Desert&#8221;.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>In 2007, Malkmus provided 3 songs to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Todd_Haynes\">Todd Haynes&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0film\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I%27m_Not_There\">I&#8217;m Not There<\/a>, based on the life of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Dylan\">Bob Dylan<\/a>. He contributed on the songs &#8220;<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ballad_of_a_Thin_Man\">Ballad of a Thin Man<\/a>&#8220;, &#8220;Can&#8217;t Leave Her Behind&#8221; and &#8220;<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maggie%27s_Farm\">Maggie&#8217;s Farm<\/a>&#8220;. Malkmus has admitted that he was never &#8220;really a really big fan of Dylan but noted that his involvement with the film had made him listen &#8220;to him again a little closer. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Malkmus&#8217;s fourth studio album with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Malkmus_and_the_Jicks\">The Jicks<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real_Emotional_Trash\">Real Emotional Trash<\/a>, was released in March 2008.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Pavement reunited in March 2010 and have since embarked on a world tour. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>In August 2011 he released his fifth studio album with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Malkmus_and_the_Jicks\">The Jicks<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mirror_Traffic\">Mirror Traffic<\/a>.
