If you’re in your 30’s to mid 40’s like most PDX People, you’ve most likely have read books illustrated by Carson Ellis (Wildwood<\/a>) to your children<\/p>\n Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1975, Carson didn’t originally start out as an artist, she attended the University of Montana and became a fine artist.<\/p>\n It wasn’t until she began illustrating the books for her soon-to-be husband Colin Meloy that she dedicated herself solely to illustration art.<\/p>\n Besides being a well-known illustrator for children’s books, Carson has also created album art, tee-shirt art, stage sets and more for iconic Portland based band, The Decemberists.<\/a><\/p>\n Ellis is an award-winning illustrator of several children’s books, including the\u00a0New York Times<\/a><\/i>\u00a0Bestsellers\u00a0Wildwood<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0written by\u00a0Colin Meloy<\/a>,<\/sup>\u00a0The Composer is Dead<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0written by\u00a0Lemony Snicket<\/a>,<\/sup>\u00a0and\u00a0The Mysterious Benedict Society<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0written by\u00a0Trenton Lee Stewart<\/a>.\u00a0<\/sup>She received a 2010 Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators for her art in\u00a0Dillweed’s Revenge,<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0Florence Parry Heide<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0She collaborated again with Meloy on the second and third novels in the\u00a0Wildwood Chronicles<\/a>\u00a0series,\u00a0Under Wildwood<\/a>\u00a0(2012)<\/sup>\u00a0and\u00a0Wildwood Imperium<\/a>\u00a0(2014).<\/sup><\/p>\n Art And Illustration\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Before transitioning to a career in illustration and drawing, Ellis studied painting at the\u00a0University of Montana<\/a>.\u00a0<\/sup>She began her career as a fine artist in San Francisco and exhibited a solo show of oil paintings at a gallery in San Jose, California.<\/sup>\u00a0Her first illustration work began when she met Colin Meloy at the University of Montana and designed gig posters for his college band Tarkio.<\/sup><\/p>\n She is also well known for her work with the indie folk rock band\u00a0The Decemberists<\/a>,<\/sup>\u00a0for whom she has created album art, T-shirts, websites, posters, and stage sets. Her album covers for the Decemberists include\u00a0What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World<\/a><\/i><\/sup>,\u00a0The Crane Wife<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Her Majesty the Decemberists<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Castaways and Cutouts<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0The Hazards of Love<\/a><\/i>, and the\u00a0EPs<\/a>\u00a05 Songs<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0The Tain<\/a><\/i>. She has also created album artwork for other musicians, such as\u00a0Laura Veirs<\/a>,\u00a0Beat Circus<\/a>, and\u00a0Weezer<\/a>.<\/p>\n Wildwood Chronicles\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n The Wildwood Chronicles<\/a>\u00a0series, written by her husband, musician\u00a0Colin Meloy<\/a>, was a bestselling series for middle-grade readers.<\/sup>\u00a0Ellis was inspired by illustrator\u00a0Pauline Baynes<\/a>of\u00a0The Chronicles of Narnia<\/a><\/i>\u00a0as well as drawings in\u00a0The Wind in the Willows<\/a><\/i>\u00a0when she created the\u00a0Wildwood<\/a>\u00a0series.<\/sup><\/p>\n In 2015, Ellis wrote and illustrated her first solo children’s book,\u00a0Home<\/i><\/a>, which explores different types of domiciles around the world, underwater, and in space.<\/sup><\/p>\n In 2016, Ellis collaborated with Portland-based wallpaper studio, Juju Papers, on a wallpaper design titled\u00a0Barn Owls and Hollyhocks.<\/i>\u00a0The design was inspired by Ellis’ move to a small barn outside of Portland<\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n <\/p>\n<\/a>About Carson Ellis<\/span><\/h1>\n
