{"id":2526,"date":"2017-10-24T11:12:56","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T18:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/?p=2526"},"modified":"2020-06-10T12:29:05","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T19:29:05","slug":"sallie-ford-singer-songwriter-portland-oregon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/?p=2526","title":{"rendered":"Sallie Ford \u2013 Famed Singer and Songwriter from Portland Oregon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By PDX People<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">PORTLAND, Ore. \u2013 Over the last 10 years Sallie Ford has been one of the most well-known singer \/ song writers to come from Portland Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With an iconic rockabilly sound, Sallie Ford has been someone that <a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/people-portland-oregon-get-know-clayton-jacobson\/\">PDX People<\/a> and long-time music fans clamor to see live in Portland Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Living in Portland since 2006 after she dropped out of college and moved to the city with the hopes of starting a career in the music industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shortly after moving to Portland, Sallie would connect with Tyler Tornfelt, Ford Tennis and Jeffrey Munger to form The Sound Outside, a band with a pure \u201cRockabilly\u201d sound that received scores of positive reviews from publications like USA today and the band soon was touring the United States as the opening act for The Avett Brothers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gBX8_wDJiLg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>About Sallie Ford<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sallie_Ford\">Sallie Ford<\/a>\u00a0is the daughter of puppeteer Hobey Ford, and grew up in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asheville,_North_Carolina\">Asheville, North Carolina<\/a>\u00a0before moving to Oregon.\u00a0<\/em><em>In Portland, she worked as a waitress, and met\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alaska\">Alaskan<\/a>\u00a0fisherman Tyler Tornfelt and Ford Tennis and Jeff Munger who were &#8220;scraping by&#8221;.\u00a0<\/em><em>With Ford on vocals and guitar, Tennis on drums, Munger on guitar, and Tornfelt on upright bass, they had a band in 2007. They played local clubs in the Portland area.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>According to singer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seth_Avett\">Seth Avett<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Avett_Brothers\">The Avett Brothers<\/a>, Ford&#8217;s songs have that &#8220;rare quality of somehow combining fun with emotional and artistic integrity&#8221; and she &#8220;fills the room with it&#8221; and reminds him of the &#8220;energy of early rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><em>The group opened for\u00a0The Avett Brothers\u00a0and recorded a five-song EP entitled\u00a0Not an Animal.\u00a0<\/em><em>Ford&#8217;s voice has been compared to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ella_Fitzgerald\">Ella Fitzgerald<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Waits\">Tom Waits<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billie_Holiday\">Billie Holiday<\/a>, with possible influences from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bessie_Smith\">Bessie Smith<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snoop_Dogg\">Snoop Dogg<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em>and used the words &#8220;two-step big beat gospel&#8221; to describe the effect.\u00a0<\/em><em>The group has toured the United States, including cities such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seattle,_Washington\">Seattle<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>and have appeared in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nashville,_Tennessee\">Nashville<\/a>. A reviewer for the\u00a0Portland Mercury\u00a0suggested that listeners should dress in 1950s style with a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trilby\">trilby<\/a>\u00a0hat&#8221;, and described the group as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sallie_Ford_and_the_Sound_Outside\">&#8220;energetic.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Sallie_Ford_and_the_Sound_Outside.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2528\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Sallie_Ford_and_the_Sound_Outside.jpg\" alt=\"Sallie Ford\" width=\"227\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Recording with The Sound Outside<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sallie\u2019s time with The Sound Outside was a building block for her career as a singer \/ song writer. In this interview she describes the process of creating an EP with the Sound Outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Jeff (guitar), Ford (drums), Tyler (bass) and I recorded the songs over a four-day weekend in October 2012 with Mike Coykendall at his Blue Rooms studio in Portland, OR. Mike is the best; a musician, engineer and producer who has recorded and toured with folks like M. Ward, She &amp; Him, Blitzen Trapper and Bright Eyes. We had worked with him before on the Dirty Radio album. He\u2019s a Portland celebrity of sorts, yet he remains very chill, humble and sweet. But enough about Mike\u2026 <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>We wanted the songs to sound more raw than our full albums Dirty Radio and Untamed Beast, so we recorded with a simple setup that would probably have been right at home in the mid-1960&#8217;s: just a few vintage microphones, all live, and all in the same room<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I wrote all the songs while surfy, punky, very raw sounds ricocheted in my mind. All the songs on the EP capture the feeling of summer for me: they&#8217;re my &#8220;summer songs.&#8221; In 2012 I was very obsessed with Portland band Satan&#8217;s Pilgrims, a killer surf band. I also was listening to The Ventures, T Rex and a couple of other garage rock legends like The Troggs, The Sonics \u2026 you get the drift. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;The Eagle Has Landed&#8221; is our first-ever instrumental song. I knew I wanted to write an instrumental song, I think I just came up with the idea while playing around on my sweet vintage Fender Jazzmaster. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;Fuck That&#8221; is a song about just going with your gut and diving in to things&#8211;whether that be going with your gut feeling, falling into relationships, getting a tattoo or literally jumping off a rock into a lake. It&#8217;s about letting go and taking a risk even if others disapprove of your choice or try to warn you off. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;Lips N\u2019 Hips&#8221; is about one-night stands or summer flings, and that romantic hope they instill, even though most of the time you don&#8217;t ever see the person again\u2014or at least that&#8217;s what my friends tell me! I guess the secret irrational hope is that you&#8217;ll run away together even though you don&#8217;t truly know each other. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;Bumpin&#8221; is a song that Jeff &amp; I wrote together while on tour, driving in the van. I just wanted to write about having a crush, but Jeff turned the song in a raunchy direction\u2014which I of course approved of immediately! I think we all know what kind of \u201cbumpin\u201d Jeff wanted to write about! <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;(I&#8217;d Go The) Whole Wide World&#8221; is a cover of a Wreckless Eric song we have been playing in our live sets for a while. It was Ford&#8217;s suggestion to start covering it and I liked it because I knew the song from &#8220;High Fidelity.&#8221; I love that movie, so I was game. We haven&#8217;t released a cover before so I thought it would be great to include cause the song has a summery feel to it and gets across the limitless possibilities summer can whisper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.partisanrecords.com\/files\/promo\/sallie-ford-summer-ep.html\">in your ear.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Sallie_Ford_and_The_Sound_Outside_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2529 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Sallie_Ford_and_The_Sound_Outside_01.jpg\" alt=\"PDX People\" width=\"3888\" height=\"2592\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #99cc00;\"><strong>Awesome Stage Presence<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to touring with the Sound Outside, and on her own since the band split up in 2011, Sallie Ford has developed an awesome stage presence while she \u201cchannels\u201d the smooth voice of Etta James and the rock tunes of Tom Waits.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>About <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Lead singer of Portland-based rock band Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside. The resulting product is a refectory piece on personal growth. Not only is \u201cSoul Sick\u201d a relatable album that can remind listeners of their own childhood and personal struggles, but it seems like a positive turning point in Ford\u2019s career. She is able to explore new sounds while simultaneously holding on to her roots and integrity and comes off sounding more mature than ever before.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Ford compares bands to relationships, and in that way, \u201cSoul Sick\u201d is very much an album about a breakup, but also the celebration of a new beginning.
