pogson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>About Tres Shannon<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There\u2019s no doubt that Tres Shannon can be considered to be an \u201cambassador of doughnuts\u201d, and Portland Oregon as well, since anytime he\u2019s spotted on the streets of Portland he always gets requests from fans who want to have their pictures taken with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tres Shannon has also appeared in the hit television show Portlandia and in the documentary Heaven Adores You.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Like many well-known brands in Portland Oregon, and across the United States, it wasn\u2019t easy building the Voodoo Doughnuts brand, and the road from getting their first location up and running to where they are today is a journey filled with struggle, but the end result has been worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Tres and Cat Daddy were introduced to each other by Tres\u2019 mom and thought they would always start a business together.\u00a0 They came up with the idea to start a funky doughnut shop, learned some from pastry chefs at doughnut camp, rented a little hole-in-the-wall retail location in Portland, and the rest is history.\u00a0 The two partners did not have any formal business training, but have seen consistent and incredible grown and success, ever since opening their doors 8 years ago.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>They have taken a very different approach to business that has helped differentiate them from anything else out there; from performing wedding in their stores, accepting only cash, being open 24 hours, to having a \u201ccock and balls\u201d doughnut that has gotten them much attention\u2026good and bad.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Expanding outside of the Northeast has been a calculated move, and they have been welcomed in Denver with open arms.\u00a0 From the mayor performing the ribbon cutting, to business coverage in the Denver Post, to having great new neighbors.\u00a0 Everyone has been excited to have Voodoo come to Denver.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Tres shared with us how they got started, what it was like opening the first shop, what success has allowed them to do, why they chose to call it Voodoo Doughnut, and some hints of what might be coming down the track for Voodoo.\u00a0 You are going to love this one.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2218 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bacon-maple-bar.jpg\" alt=\"bacon maple bar - Voodoo Doughnut\" width=\"336\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bacon-maple-bar.jpg 336w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bacon-maple-bar-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Bacon Wrapped Maple Bar<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you ask anyone who lives in PDX and has visited Voodoo Doughnut they will tell you that they have their own personal favorite but thanks to their bacon wrapped maple bar Voodoo Doughnut was officially \u201cput on the map\u201d of foodies across the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Over the years Voodoo Doughnut has enjoyed lots of publicity from celebs like Jay Leno, Anthony Bourdain and Morgan Spurlock. Their flagship Portland location has also been featured on countless television shows that have been filmed in Portland over the years including Leverage and Grimm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just about everyone loves doughnuts, and like hamburgers, they are almost instantly recognizable anywhere in the world but was the Voodoo Doughnut brand successful from day one after they launched their first location in 2003?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3qqvMT615eA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Were you successful from day one?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>We sold out on our first night. We had a line, and part of the reason we had a line is we were still pretty green. And Kenneth and I worked 18 to 20 hours a day and we were open from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. \u2014 that got a lot of press.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Did you know people would become fanatics for your product?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I did underestimate people\u2019s total fanaticism for doughnuts. There are people who just go crazy for these things. As a kid, I wasn\u2019t even allowed to have them. Cat Daddy would get them every Sunday. People just love doughnuts. It\u2019s a real comfort food. It\u2019s cheap.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I knew we would be in a great location, but we\u2019ve got people standing in line for an hour and a half in the rain in front of garbage cans and a porno theater to get an apple fritter.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I can\u2019t emphasize enough that store number one is 750 square feet \u2014 500 of it is the kitchen, 200 square feet of it is a lobby and 50 square feet of it is the coolest bathroom in town. That place is like a crazy I Love Lucy episode.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>We just can\u2019t make enough doughnuts to keep it running, so we opened up a second location right across town on 15th and Davis. We\u2019re actually feeding the store downtown with doughnuts with that one. We decorate them downtown, but [the second store makes] the shell. On top of that, we still make doughnuts downtown, of course.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Do you advertise the business?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>We\u2019ve done all our marketing. One of our things we\u2019re pretty adamant about is we don\u2019t pay for advertising. We pay for yearbooks and weird little high school things and old punk rock magazines. I bet we\u2019ve spent less than $5,000 in advertising since we\u2019ve opened. People have told us we\u2019ve had $10 million to $20 million worth of advertising [through media appearances]. That would be a really interesting thesis for <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/12\/21\/richard-shannon-kenneth-pogson-voodoo-doughnut_n_910202.html\">somebody.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1538_001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2205 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1538_001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1538_001.png 474w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1538_001-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #99cc00;\"><strong>\u201cMayor of Old Town\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to Voodoo Doughnut, Tres Shannon has earned the nickname \u201cMayor of old town\u201d by his neighbors and like a mayor, he\u2019s not been afraid to promote his city and brand when politicians come to town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the 2016 Presidential Campaign Voodoo Doughnut created doughnuts in honor of Presidential hopefuls Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. His doughnuts were warmly received by the Sanders campaign and he even met with Bernie when he stopped in Portland last May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h9PdmROn2qQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>While most people in liberal Portland greeted the Bernie-based treats warmly, some angrily insisted they would never darken the shop&#8217;s\u00a0door again. \u201cTrump supporters like doughnuts, too,\u201d said Voodoo\u2019s owner, Richard \u201cTres\u201d Shannon. \u201cI\u2019d love to do a Donald Trump doughnut with flames and devil eyes, but I don\u2019t want to alienate an entire group of people!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>On Tuesday, as Oregon voters go to the polls, Mr Shannon said Voodoo would probably make a Bernie doughnut and a Hillary Clinton doughnut, in the interests of balance. The political doughnuts are for the shop\u2019s display only, not for sale \u2013 although Mr Shannon did deliver a box to Sanders campaign staff when the Vermont Senator held a rally in Portland in <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-elections-this-portland-doughnut-shop-is-feeling-the-bern-a7033116.html\">March.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1539.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2206 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1539.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"554\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1539.png 554w, https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/2017-07-05_1539-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Music Label<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to the mainstream success of Voodoo Doughnut Tres Shannon has been able to translate his success into other areas including a music label called Voodoo Doughnut Recordings.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>1) For now, Voodoo will be releasing 7&#8243; vinyl singles, though albums may come down the line. The plan is to release one a month in 2014 in editions of 1,000, with a bonus making it a baker&#8217;s dozen. Synergy!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>2) On that note, the label&#8217;s A&amp;R desk has a heavy ear toward doughnut-related content. Artists looking to cash in on that Portland C.R.E.A.M. should consider going full pastry on their next demo: &#8220;We would like one side of the single to be at least peripherally related to doughnuts,&#8221; Voodoo explains. &#8220;The song on the other side of the single can be about anything you want. Except for cupcakes.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>3) Voodoo isn&#8217;t putting a limit on its genre options, including spoken word, though &#8212; like simple carbohydrates &#8212; the company has an affinity for rock music.
