{"id":1467,"date":"2017-03-17T09:45:08","date_gmt":"2017-03-17T16:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/?p=1467"},"modified":"2017-04-08T21:19:05","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T04:19:05","slug":"portland-anarchists-take-streets-fix-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/?p=1467","title":{"rendered":"Portland Anarchists Take to The Streets Again &#8211; To Fix the Roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/images.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1470\" src=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By PDX People<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">PORTLAND, Ore &#8211; There\u2019s no denying that Portland Oregon&#8217;s roads are in bad shape thanks to a particularly <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/pdxpeople.com\/joshua-turner-is-homeless\/\">brutal winter<\/a><\/span><\/strong> which has brought months of snow and ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After the snow, has melted we\u2019re left with the reminder of a hard winter in the form of hundreds of potholes across Portland that continue to tear up our vehicles and cause damages as the city struggles to catch up on repairing them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With a backlog of potholes to fix many PDX people have been left frustrated and even considered doing something about the pothole problem themselves although most citizens rarely take action when it comes to issues like road repairs but that\u2019s changed because a group of citizens called Portland Anarchist Road Care has stepped up and started fixing potholes themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>About Portland Anarchist Road Care<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>The group, working anonymously and with one wearing a mask in photos, only claims to have patched a handful of potholes on Southeast Salmon Street during an outing in late February. But an administrator of the Facebook page said the group is planning more actions. Part of the motivation, the group says on its Facebook page, is to squash perceptions that anarchists only break windows and block roads.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;As anarchists, we seek to bring about a society in which coercive hierarchies, such as government and capitalism &#8230; no longer exist,&#8221; a member of the group told The Oregonian\/OregonLive in an email. &#8220;To be exceptionally clear, anarchists do not desire chaos, we desire freedom and equality.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>The group said it&#8217;s is now exploring alternatives to patching potholes, including mobilizing people to fix roads in their own neighborhoods and increasing pothole visibility, particularly around bike routes. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;By creating structures to serve the same purpose as state structures, such as our organization, we have the ability to show that government is not necessary for society to function, that we can have a truly free and liberated society,&#8221; the email said.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Residents of pockmarked cities occasionally take on pothole repairs in small acts of municipal disobedience, or to try to draw the city&#8217;s attention. There have been reports of people <\/em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/commuting\/index.ssf\/2015\/06\/flowers_potholes_protest_city.html\"><em>planting flowers in potholes<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2017\/02\/14\/a-valentines-day-miracle-a-south-philly-crack-filled-with-rainbow-jimmies\/\"><em>filling them with sprinkles<\/em><\/a><em> or <\/em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/comedy-phallus-crusader-gets-potholes-9105592\"><em>encircling them in lewd drawings<\/em><\/a><em> in hopes they&#8217;ll draw a faster official response. <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/commuting\/index.ssf\/2017\/03\/why_portland_anarchists_are_pa.html\">Read more.<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>City Officials Discourage Anarchist Pothole Repair <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although many people in Portland Oregon support the anarchists repairing Portland\u2019s huge backlog of potholes, the city has a dim view of the hard work of the anarchists and has taken to discourage their hard work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Dylan Rivera, a spokesman for the Bureau of Transportation in Portland, anarchists who tackle the pothole repair themselves could face civil litigation for their efforts, although there\u2019s nothing specific in the city laws that prohibit it, so it looks like we will continue to see the anarchists at work on city streets at least for now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The anarchists continue to take the criticism of their work on potholes across the city in stride and recently posted this message online about what they think the word anarchy really means:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201dMany of the critiques we have received from the left have said we should be tearing the streets up, rather than paving them,\u201d PARC told HuffPost. \u201cWe find this view ableist, classist and antisocial. To us, anarchy is about building community and creating networks of solidarity and mutual aid.\u201d &#8211; <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/anarchists-fixing-potholes-portland_us_58caaa7be4b0ec9d29d9575b\">Huffpo<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Good Thing Or Bad Thing?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Love them, or dislike them, Portland Anarchist Road Care is an example of what can happen when citizens band together to fix long-standing problems that the city hasn\u2019t been able to resolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yes, the anarchists have set a poor example in the past but when it comes to this act of \u201ccivil disobedience\u201d\u00a0 but more people are paying attention to what they are doing especially in light of the fact that many major cities across the United States are unable to adequately budget for road care due to pensions and other financial problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Could we see more actions like this in the near future?
